SaaS validation

Validate a SaaS idea before you build it

Who it is for

Founders about to commit months of build time to an unproven idea.

Outcome

Evidence that someone will pay, gathered in days rather than after a launch.

Validating a SaaS idea means gathering evidence that a specific group of people has a problem they will pay to solve, before you spend months building. Asking friends whether they like the idea is not validation; it produces agreement, not evidence. Real validation comes from two sources: public signals that a market already spends money in this space, and a direct test where someone commits something — an email, a call, or a payment — in exchange for a promise.

Start with signals that already exist

Before running any test of your own, check whether the market is already spending. Competitors with public pricing, ads running continuously, and active communities are all evidence gathered at zero cost.

  • Competitors charging money for something adjacent
  • Ads running for weeks in the same niche
  • Communities where the pain is discussed unprompted

Make the promise specific enough to reject

A vague promise gets vague feedback. "Analytics for SaaS" cannot be validated; "see which of your competitors started advertising this week" can be, because someone can look at it and say no.

  • One audience, named precisely
  • One outcome, stated concretely
  • A promise a person can decline

Ask for a commitment, not an opinion

The test is whether someone gives up something scarce. An email is weak evidence, a scheduled call is better, a pre-payment is strongest. Opinions cost nothing and are worth accordingly.

  • Waitlist signup: weak but directional
  • Booked call: real interest
  • Pre-payment or concierge sale: actual validation

Frequently asked questions

FAQ: SaaS validation

How do you validate a SaaS idea?

Combine two things: public evidence that a market already spends money on the problem (competitors, pricing pages, live ads) and a direct test where a real prospect commits something in exchange for a specific promise. Neither alone is sufficient.

How long should validation take?

Days to a few weeks, not months. If validating takes longer than building a first version, the promise is probably too vague to test — sharpen the promise rather than extending the research.

Is a waitlist enough to validate an idea?

It is a starting signal, not proof. Email signups cost the person nothing. Treat a waitlist as a list of people to ask for a stronger commitment, and judge the idea by how many of them take the next step.

What if competitors already exist?

That is usually good news. Competitors prove that buyers exist and have budget. The risk is a market with zero competitors, which often means nobody has found a way to get paid for solving that problem.
